Includes guide, porters, meals & gear.★ 4.96 (98)2dUS$ 175View › So we’re halfway up Mount Rinjani and my legs already feel like boiled noodles—nobody warned me about the grasslands being so open and endless. Our guide, Adi, kept a steady pace and somehow managed to joke with the porters in Bahasa while balancing a kettle on his shoulder. The air smelled dry, almost dusty, but every so often you’d catch a whiff of wildflowers or someone’s clove cigarette. By the time we reached Sembalun Crater Rim that first evening, I just sat down hard and didn’t care if my socks were full of seeds. Sunset lit up the lake below in this weird blue-gold color—honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so small looking out at Lombok like that.
I barely slept (who really sleeps before a summit push?), but at 3am Adi handed me something he called “breakfast”—mostly sweet tea and a biscuit—and we started for the top. It’s quiet except for boots scraping gravel and someone cursing softly behind me. The summit hike is brutal; I kept thinking about turning back but then dawn started creeping over Bali’s outline way off in the distance. Standing at the top of Mount Rinjani with numb fingers and sweat freezing on my neck—yeah, it’s hard to explain. We stumbled back down to camp for real breakfast (the fried rice tasted like heaven), then headed toward Segara Anak Lake where steam from the hot springs curled into the cold air. My legs shook getting in but after five minutes I never wanted to leave.
The last night was spent on Senaru Crater Rim—everyone quieter now, maybe tired or just not wanting it to end yet. The porters laughed at our attempts to set up tents (they fixed everything). You could see Gili Islands floating out past Lombok if you squinted through the haze. Next morning was all downhill through thick jungle; birds everywhere but mostly I remember slipping on roots and laughing at how slow we were moving by then. Lunch before Senaru village felt like a reward—rice wrapped in banana leaf tastes different when you’ve earned it, you know?
