The Experience

First thing I remember is the way our guide, Fajar, grinned when he handed me a chunk of weird-looking fruit and said, “Try—orangutans love it.” I did (tasted kind of sour), and he laughed at my face. We’d barely left Bukit Lawang but already the air felt thick and green, with a low hum from somewhere deep in the trees. It was just us, Fajar’s stories about growing up here, and the hope we’d actually see an orangutan. I kept glancing up — half nervous, half excited.

The hike itself wasn’t easy but not impossible either. We stopped a lot — sometimes because Fajar spotted something (a Thomas Leaf Monkey leaping overhead) or just to catch our breath. Lunch was simple but honestly tasted better than most things I’ve had in cities; maybe it was just being hungry or maybe it was eating next to a river that smelled like wet earth and leaves. At one point we heard gibbons calling across the valley — kind of eerie but beautiful too. And yeah, we did see an orangutan. She moved so slow it almost looked like she was floating. By late afternoon we reached camp—a tarp shelter right by the water. The river was cold but after sweating all day it felt amazing to just float for a minute. Dinner was cooked over a fire while someone played guitar (badly). There were jokes about leeches and ghost stories that made zero sense in English but everyone laughed anyway. I fell asleep listening to the river instead of traffic for once.

Next morning started early with coffee by the water—mist everywhere. My legs were sore but after breakfast we hiked to a waterfall that looked like something out of a postcard (except slippery rocks are real).
