The Experience
The trek starts around 9am on day one, leaving Bukit Lawang and heading into the tropical rainforest on foot. You walk for 6–7 hours with regular breaks for food, water and fruit, moving deeper into the jungle with real chances of spotting orangutans and other animals in their natural habitat. The pace includes time to stop and photograph wildlife and the forest itself. By mid-afternoon you reach the overnight camp, where you can swim or rest before dinner, which a private chef prepares around 6:30–7pm. After eating, the group gathers for jungle tea and can spend the evening together or retire early.
Day two begins with the sounds of the jungle — monkeys and birds — and tea or coffee with biscuits. Breakfast is substantial, fueling the second day of trekking, which focuses on waterfalls and rivers. After lunch and fruit, you board a traditional jungle "taxi" — a raft — and float down the Bohorok River back to Bukit Lawang, where you're dropped at your accommodation. Jungle shoes, mosquito spray and water are provided throughout.
