The experience
The trek departs from the EcoTravel office in Bukit Lawang at 8:30 am and runs through Gunung Leuser National Park with a certified guide and assistant. You hike in a small group of no more than eight people, which keeps the experience focused on wildlife spotting and minimizes impact on the forest. The operator's guides are locals with years of experience in the region and are certified by the Indonesia Tourist Guides Association. They speak English and know the plants and animals well. While orangutans are the main draw, sightings are not guaranteed (these are wild animals), but the guides' reputation in Bukit Lawang is strong enough that most treks do encounter them.
You reach the campsite along a river bank by around 3 pm, where you spend the night in a double tent with mattress, pillows and sleeping bag provided. The cook prepares lunch on the trail and a freshly made dinner at camp, with breakfast the next morning before you set out to visit a nearby waterfall. Water is filtered on-site, and the operator provides tea, coffee, snacks and fruit throughout. The overnight setup is designed for comfort in the jungle rather than roughing it bare.
On the morning of day two, after the waterfall visit, a "jungle taxi", a traditional tube-raft, carries you back down the Bohorok River to Bukit Lawang, arriving by 2:30 pm. The rafting skipper and all safety gear (tubes, jackets, helmets for children) are included. You'll need to meet your guide team at the EcoTravel office between 4 pm and 7 pm the evening before the trek starts for an orientation. This means arriving in Bukit Lawang the day before, as the transfer from Medan airport takes about four and a half hours. The trek suits travelers who are fit enough for sustained hiking over two days and comfortable sleeping in a tent in the rainforest.
