The experience

The trek starts early on day one once breakfast is ready, usually around 8 am. You'll ascend into the national park, walking at your own pace through jungle with roots, muddy patches, and steep climbs and descents. The guide stops whenever wildlife appears (monkeys, birds, other creatures), so you can watch. Lunch is served during the trek, usually nasi goreng with tropical fruit and snacks. By afternoon you reach Camp 1, a jungle shelter where a tent with mosquito net and simple mattress is set up for the night.

Day two starts with jungle sounds: the river, monkeys calling, birds. Light breakfast (pancakes, fruit, coffee) is served at the camp. A short optional trek of one to two hours lets you explore more of the park and swim at a nearby waterfall if you want. By midday you're back at the campsite for lunch by the river, then everything is packed. The return journey is a tube raft float down the Bohorok River, taking 30 to 40 minutes and ending back in Bukit Lawang village where the guide drops you at your accommodation.

The terrain is demanding: roots, uneven ground, muddy surfaces, and plenty of ascending and descending. You'll cross creeks and move at your own pace, so take the time you need. Storage is available for bags you don't want to carry. The operator works with the national park to keep the trek ethical and safe, maintaining distance from wildlife and leaving no waste behind.
