summary

Walk beneath Sumatran trees, hear gibbons, spot orangutans

You’ll hike deep into Bukit Lawang’s jungle with a local guide who knows every sound and shortcut. Watch for orangutans swinging overhead, eat lunch surrounded by trees, and hear stories you won’t find online. It’s sweaty, muddy, sometimes hilarious—and you’ll probably leave thinking about those orange faces long after.

itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Full day jungle trek in Bukit Lawang

  • Pick up at accommodation 9:00 am
  • Hike jungle 5-6 hours
  • Learn about plants and animals
  • Take photos of wildlife
  • See orangutans and other animals
  • Lunch stop included
  • Option to walk back through jungle

The first thing I noticed was how thick the air felt under the canopy—like stepping into another world right after our guide, Dedi, met us outside our guesthouse in Bukit Lawang. He grinned and handed out mosquito repellent before we even left the road. The sun was already high but filtered through leaves so green they almost glowed. I remember my shoes sinking a little in the mud as we started walking—Dedi joked it was “jungle massage.”

It’s not quiet in Gunung Leuser. There’s this background chorus—cicadas, something thumping above (probably macaques), and once, a hornbill whooshing past so close I ducked. We stopped every few minutes because Dedi would point out some plant or explain how Thomas Leaf Monkeys always look surprised (he’s right—they do). I still think about that moment when he spotted an orangutan ahead. She watched us with this slow, calm blink while her baby swung around like it was showing off. Didn’t expect to feel so small just watching them.

Lunch came out of Dedi’s backpack—simple rice and vegetables wrapped in banana leaf, eaten cross-legged on a mossy rock while ants tried their luck at our crumbs. We laughed about my attempt at Bahasa Indonesia (I got “terima kasih” right at least). After five or six hours of trekking—honestly lost track—we had the option to walk back or float downriver but stuck to walking because it felt right to finish on foot. My legs were tired but my head felt clearer than it had in ages. Funny how that happens.
