Two nights in the rainforest canopy, tracking wild orangutans and gibbons deeper than day trips reach.

A 3-day trek into Gunung Leuser National Park from Medan with two nights camping beside the river, led by a certified local guide with 5+ years of jungle experience. Groups stay small at six travelers maximum. You trek through primary rainforest searching for Sumatran orangutans, Thomas leaf monkeys, white-handed gibbons, macaques and hornbills; learn about medicinal plants and local traditions; swim in the river; and return to Bukit Lawang by floating downstream on river tubes. All National Park permits, camping equipment, meals, drinking water and tropical fruits are included. The extra night deep in the park significantly raises your chances of meaningful wildlife encounters compared to single-night treks.

The experience

Three days gives you what a one-night trek cannot: time to move beyond the areas where guides routinely take visitors, into sections of Gunung Leuser where the jungle feels genuinely wild. Your certified local guide, native to the Bukit Lawang community and trained over 5+ years, leads groups of no more than six through primary rainforest trails. The pace is built around wildlife spotting rather than distance, so you stop when gibbons call overhead, when Thomas leaf monkeys move through the canopy, when hornbills appear. Along the way your guide explains how local communities have used jungle plants for food and traditional medicine for generations: knowledge that turns the trek into something closer to an education than a hike.

You camp two nights at riverside campsites deep inside the park, waking to the rainforest itself rather than returning to a village each evening. Your guide prepares traditional jungle dinners over an open fire and fresh tropical fruits appear at midday breaks. The river runs alongside both campsites, so you can swim and cool off between treks. On the final morning, after a short trek and breakfast, you trade the trails for the Bahorok River: you sit on large rubber tubes tied together and float downstream through jungle scenery back to Bukit Lawang, arriving around midday. That river tubing finish is the highlight many travelers remember longest: the rainforest lining both banks, the water moving you through it without effort.

All National Park permits, camping equipment (sleeping mattress, mosquito net, tent), meals, drinking water and the river tubing ride are fully included. You need moderate fitness for the trekking itself (the trails are uneven and the pace depends on wildlife sightings, not on covering distance), but the two-night structure means you can rest between days in ways a rushed single-night trek does not allow.

Is this one for you?Choose this trek if you want to move beyond the standard day-trip experience and spend real time in the rainforest canopy. The two nights deep in the park are what make the wildlife encounters feel genuine rather than rushed, and the small group size (maximum six) means your guide can adapt the pace to what you're actually seeing rather than sticking to a schedule.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 17 years); Child (3 to 11 years); Infant (under 3).

What's the difference between the 3-day trek and a one-night Bukit Lawang trek?

The extra night takes you deeper into rarely visited sections of Gunung Leuser where wildlife encounters are more frequent and the jungle feels less traveled. You also spend more time with your guide learning about the ecosystem and medicinal plants, rather than rushing to cover ground and return to the village.

How likely am I to see orangutans on this trek?

Sumatran orangutans live wild in Gunung Leuser, and the two nights deep in the park significantly increase your chances of spotting them compared to shorter treks. Your guide knows the territory and the animals' patterns, but sightings depend on where the orangutans are on any given day. Your guide will also show you Thomas leaf monkeys, white-handed gibbons, macaques and hornbills, which are more reliably encountered.

What do I sleep in at the campsites?

You camp in a tent beside the river with a sleeping mattress and mosquito net provided. The campsites are peaceful and basic (no electricity or running water), so you're genuinely immersed in the rainforest environment, but your guide handles all setup and cooking.

Is the river tubing safe for someone who doesn't swim well?

River tubing on the Bahorok River is a relaxing float downstream on large rubber tubes tied together, not a swimming activity. You sit on the tubes and the current carries you. The guide stays with the group. Moderate fitness is recommended for the trekking portions, but the tubing itself is the easiest part of the three days.

What's included in the price, and what isn't?

All National Park permits, camping equipment, meals, drinking water, tropical fruits and the river tubing ride back to Bukit Lawang are included. Transportation to and from Medan is available with the All-Inclusive option. The basic package does not include private transport, though public transportation options operate nearby.
