The experience
The day starts with hotel pickup around 9am after breakfast. You cross the Bohorok River and enter the jungle on foot, moving through the forest floor where the guide points out animals and plants as you walk. The goal is to spot orangutans, but the trek also passes other wildlife. If you see something that catches your eye, you ask the guide what it is. Exotic fruits harvested locally are served along the way.
Around noon you reach the jungle restaurant for a proper lunch, then continue trekking for a few more hours through the park. The walk covers about seven hours total. In the afternoon you arrive at the jungle station, where you board a traditional raft for the ride back across the Bohorok River to your hotel. The certified guide speaks English throughout and carries knowledge of the forest that makes the trek more than just walking. It becomes a conversation about what you're moving through.
The trek is built around a commitment to the place: the entrance permit, guide fees and your participation all go toward keeping Gunung Leuser clean and safe. Ten percent of what you pay funds schooling for children in Bukit Lawang and financial support for single mothers in the community, so the money stays in the village.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (5 to 12 years). Under 5: they can't be included in the booking.
Can I actually see orangutans on this trek?
The goal of the trek is to spot orangutans in Gunung Leuser National Park, and the guide knows where they move through the forest. Sightings are not guaranteed (the animals are wild and their location changes), but the trek is designed around finding them, and the guide will search the areas where they are most likely to be.
What happens if I can't keep up with the pace?
The trek is a full-day walk through the jungle, so you need at least a moderate level of physical fitness. The guide sets the pace and can adjust it, but this is not a casual stroll. If you have concerns about your fitness, spinal health or cardiovascular condition, mention them when you book so the operator can advise whether the trek suits you.
Is lunch included, and what if I have dietary restrictions?
Lunch is included and served at the jungle restaurant around midday. If you have a food allergy or need a vegetarian diet, let the operator know at the time of booking so they can prepare something suitable for you.
Do I need to arrange my own transport to Bukit Lawang?
Hotel pickup is included in the trek price. If you need transport from Medan airport or another location to Bukit Lawang itself, that is available as an add-on option at checkout.
