The experience
The trek starts at 8:30 AM from Bambu Restaurant Eco Lodge or your hotel, with a briefing on wildlife safety and the route ahead. You'll hike with one or two certified local guides in a small group of four to six people. The first day runs three to four hours into dense jungle, trails start easy then steepen, where you'll spot semi-wild orangutans, Thomas leaf monkeys, long-tailed macaques, monitor lizards and tropical birds. Your guides point out medicinal plants and jungle survival techniques as you move. Around 1 PM you stop for lunch of fresh fruit and local food like nasi goreng or rice with tempeh and eggs. The afternoon trek takes another two to three hours through more challenging terrain before you reach Camp 1 around 4 to 5 PM. You sleep in a tent with a mosquito net and simple mattress inside a jungle shelter.
Day 2 pushes deeper into the forest. After breakfast of jungle pancakes and fruit, you trek four to five hours through denser, more remote jungle where wild orangutans and gibbons are more likely to appear. You'll cross rivers, climb ridges and pass through old rubber plantations and thick undergrowth. Lunch is fresh tropical fruit and rice with vegetables near a river or shaded area. The second camp sits deeper and quieter, often near a rocky riverbank with caves, waterfalls or swimming holes. In the evening you help prepare dinner with the guides and listen to the jungle at night: owls, cicadas, frogs, possibly wild boars. If the sky is clear, there's stargazing.
Day 3 starts early with optional wildlife spotting near the viewpoint or river while gibbons are active. After a light breakfast and cleanup, you trek downhill toward the Bohorok River over one to two hours, moving slowly enough to watch for wildlife. Then comes the tube raft return: you ride back to Bukit Lawang in tied rubber inner tubes steered by a guide, floating past the lush forest wall, watching locals wash clothes and kids wave from the riverbank. You're dropped at your accommodation in the village.
