The experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel and a private driver who takes you through Udaipur at your own pace. City Palace sits on the banks of Lake Pichola and holds a collection of weapons, sedan chairs, tiger cages and photographs. Part of the royal family still lives there. Jagdish Temple stands within the palace complex in Indo-Aryan style, and a ferry ride on Lake Pichola departs from inside the palace grounds, letting you reach Jagmandir Island: a palace on the lake itself where you can see Rajasthani architecture up close.

The itinerary also takes in Saheliyon ki Bari, a sprawling garden built for the royal court's women, with five fountain areas and enough space to walk and rest for about half an hour. A circular marble-fountain park offers quiet time by the water, and Fateh Sagar Lake (serene and well-maintained) gives you room to sit on the banks and watch the view without crowds. Bharatiya Lok Kala Mandal showcases traditional performing arts, tribal dress and customs through exhibits and live Kathputli puppet shows and dance performances. A crystal glassware museum rounds out the cultural stops if you want to see an unusual collection of lead-crystal furniture and decorative pieces.
