The Experience

Kumbhalgarh Fort's wall stretches 36 kilometers across the Aravalli hills—so long that locals call it the great wall of India. You'll drive two hours from Udaipur to reach it on day two, but the first day sets the stage. Start at City Palace, the largest palace complex in Rajasthan, begun by Maharana Udai Singh in 1559 and finished by his successors nearly 200 years later. The stone work alone tells you this wasn't built in a hurry. Your English-speaking driver picks you up from your hotel, the airport, or the railway station, and the morning moves through the palace, then to Jagdish Temple—a three-story structure 79 feet high, built in 1651 and still managed by Udaipur's royal family.

After the temple, you'll spend time at Lake Pichola, where you can walk the banks or sit in the garden and watch the water reflect the old city and the Aravalli ranges. The lake is where the palace islands float—Jagmandir, Lake Palace, the Leela—and it's the kind of view that makes you understand why someone chose to build a kingdom here. You'll also stop at Saheliyon Ki Bari, a garden with fountains and birds, and the Vintage Car Museum if you want to see how Rajasthani royalty traveled. That night you stay in Udaipur.

Day two is the fort and the temple. After breakfast, the drive to Kumbhalgarh takes about two hours depending on traffic. Once there, your guide walks you through the history—the fort was built to defend the kingdom, and the wall is so massive that you feel it before you understand it. Then comes Ranakpur, a Jain temple from the 15th century that took 65 years to build. The main chamber holds the idol of Adinath, and five pillars inside each hold idols of different Tirthankaras. Four separate entrances lead to the center. An audio guide helps you move through the complex structure without rushing. After exploring, you drive back to Udaipur and your hotel, or to the airport or station if you're leaving that day.
