The Experience

You don't expect to spend three days in one region and still feel like you've barely scratched it. Udaipur does that to you. The first morning starts with pickup from your hotel or the railway station, and then the City Palace appears—not gradually, but all at once, sprawling across the lakeside like someone decided to build a small city out of marble and ambition. Your English-speaking driver takes you through the complex, which Maharana Udai Singh started in 1559 and his successors didn't finish until the 18th century. Two to three hours here means you're not rushing past the courtyards and the views down to Lake Pichola, where you can actually see the palace reflected in the water. After that, Shree Jagdish Temple comes next—a 79-foot structure built in 1651 that still belongs to the royal family, so there's a sense of continuity that most temples don't have.

The second day is the long one. You leave after breakfast for Kumbhalgarh Fort, about two hours away depending on traffic. The fort sits high enough that the views flatten out into layers of landscape, and the walls—the second largest in the world, they call it the "great wall of India"—run so far you can't see where they end. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it feels like one, not because of a plaque but because of the scale. After exploring there, you drive to Ranakpur Jain Temple, which took 65 years to build in the 15th century. The temple has four entrances and five pillars, each one carved with idols of different Tirthankaras, and the central pillar holds the idol of Adinath. An audio guide is included, which helps because the structure is intricate enough that you'd miss half of it otherwise. You're back in Udaipur by evening.

Day three takes you to Chittaurgarh Fort, about an hour away. Founded in the 8th century by Bappa Rawal and perched 151 meters above the surrounding plain, it's one of India's largest fortresses. The approach winds through seven fortified gateways, and the fort itself dominates everything around it. You spend three to four hours here before returning to your hotel. By the end of the three days, you've moved through three different centuries of Rajasthani history without ever feeling like you're being rushed through a checklist.
