The experience
You start in Panajachel with a bike fitting and helmet, then board a boat to Tzununa, one of the most remote villages on the lake. From there you ride 5 kilometers of dirt road into San Marcos, then switch to paved road heading toward San Pablo. The route stays easy enough for families and beginners, though you'll need moderate fitness to handle the full day. A stop at Crystalline Beach gives you a chance to swim or rest before continuing to San Juan, where weaving cooperatives and coffee plantations sit open for visits if you want to stop.
The cycling passes through countryside where Cackchikel and Tzutujil Mayan families work their land using techniques that have remained unchanged for generations. You'll see corn and vegetable plantations, local farms, and craftspeople at work. The guide leads you through all four villages and finishes the ride in San Pedro. From there, a boat carries you back across the lake to Panajachel, completing the round trip in about 6 hours total: 4 hours on the bike and roughly an hour of boat time.
Hotel pickup and drop-off are included for selected Panajachel hotels. The tour runs in all weather, so bring layers and rain gear if the forecast calls for it. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and a minimum of two people per booking applies.
