The experience
You start with hotel pickup from Panajachel, then boat transfer to the trailhead near Santa Cruz la Laguna. From there, the hike follows the shoreline between Santa Cruz and Tzununa, passing through the small Mayan villages of El Jaibalito and Tzununa. These are working communities. You'll see farmers and villagers going about their day rather than a curated stop. The trail itself is the draw: it runs along ancient paths in a section of the lake that has no road access, so hiking is the only way in.
The 2–3 hours of walking moves at a pace suited to families and mixed fitness levels. You're not scrambling or climbing. The route stays close to the water and the villages, so the focus stays on the landscape and the people who live there. After you reach Tzununa, the boat brings you back to Panajachel and your hotel.
What’s included
- Hotel pickup and drop-off from selected Panajachel hotels.
- boat transfers from Panajachel to the trailhead and from Tzununa back to town.
- a live guide in English or Spanish throughout the hike.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
How do I get from Panajachel to the start of the hike?
Hotel pickup is included, followed by a boat transfer from Panajachel to the trailhead near Santa Cruz la Laguna. The boat is part of the tour, not an extra cost.
What are the villages like that we pass through?
El Jaibalito and Tzununa are small, inhabited Mayan communities where you'll see farmers and villagers in their daily routines. They're not tourist attractions but real working villages, so the experience is low-key and unscripted.
How long is the actual hiking, and is it difficult?
The hike takes 2–3 hours and suits all ages. Moderate fitness helps, but the trail is not steep or technical. It follows the shoreline and passes through villages, so the pace is manageable for families and mixed ability groups.
What should I bring or wear?
Wear comfortable hiking shoes or trail boots with good grip, as the paths can be uneven. Bring water, sun protection and a light layer. The lake shore can be windy. Food and drinks are not included, so pack snacks if you want them during the hike.
