itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Lake Atitlan boat tour and culture

  • Pick up from hotel in Guatemala City or Antigua
  • Drive to Lake Atitlan enjoying scenic views
  • Take water taxi to San Juan La Laguna
  • Attend workshops on dyeing, herbs, and chocolate
  • Walk through colorful streets of San Juan
  • Return to Panajachel for lunch
  • Drive back to hotel in Guatemala City or Antigua

I’ll be honest, I almost missed the van because I was hunting for coffee in Antigua and lost track of time. The driver just grinned and waved me in — apparently I wasn’t the first. The road to Lake Atitlan is all curves and switchbacks, with mist clinging to the hills. I sat next to a woman from Quetzaltenango who told me about her grandmother’s weaving; she pointed out when the air changed and you could smell woodsmoke through the window. It’s a long drive but not boring, even if my stomach did a few flips on those bends.

The lake showed up suddenly — blue as paint, volcanoes standing around it like they’re guarding something old. Our guide, David, joked that the water taxi was “Guatemalan massage therapy” (the waves are no joke). I held onto my hat and tried not to laugh every time we bounced over a swell. When we reached San Juan La Laguna, it felt like walking into someone’s open sketchbook: murals everywhere, women at looms under tin roofs, kids chasing each other barefoot. We stopped for a workshop on natural dyeing — I still remember the smell of crushed indigo leaves on my hands. There was a chocolate tasting too; I probably ate more than my share but nobody seemed to mind.

Lunch in Panajachel was simple — grilled chicken and tortillas at a place where everyone seemed to know our guide by name. The air there is different somehow: warmer, with that lake breeze carrying bits of conversation from every direction. On the way back I nearly fell asleep listening to two older men argue (gently) about which volcano is tallest. I didn’t expect to feel so comfortable so quickly; maybe it’s something about being surrounded by water and mountains that makes you let your guard down.
