The experience
The day starts with hotel pickup in Guatemala City and a drive west toward the highlands, passing through wooded areas of pine and a valley where local farmers grow vegetables and fruit. You arrive in Panajachel, the main town on Lake Atitlán's shore, then board a public boat to cross the lake to San Juan La Laguna on the opposite side. The boat ride itself is part of the experience: the lake sits between volcanic peaks and the water is what the name promises.
San Juan La Laguna is a working Mayan village where weaving, fishing, and medicinal plant cultivation are daily life, not performances. Murals painted by local artists called the Xocomeel cover the town's buildings and tell the history and customs of the people who live there. You walk through the town with your guide, who explains what you're seeing in English or Spanish. After time in San Juan, you take the public boat back to Panajachel, where you have lunch on your own before the return drive to Guatemala City via Antigua. The full day is 12 hours from pickup to drop-off.
The tour includes transport in an air-conditioned minivan or bus, hotel pickup and drop-off, a local guide, and the boat transfers between Panajachel and San Juan La Laguna. Wear walking shoes, bring a hat and sunglasses, and bring a camera. The lake and the murals are worth photographing. A minimum of two paying adults is required for the tour to run. If that number is not reached, the operator will refund or reschedule your booking.
