The experience
The tour starts early with a Chapin breakfast in Panajachel, then moves to the water. You travel by boat across Lake Atitlan to San Juan La Laguna, where the morning centers on two workshops: one showing how Mayan weavers create textiles and what each pattern means, the other explaining the role of melipon bees in the local ecosystem. Between the workshops, you walk Calle de los Umbreros and Calle de los Hatros, streets lined with art and handmade goods.
San Pedro La Laguna is a short stop where you can rest or walk Hummingbird Street and browse the local crafts. The final destination is Santiago Atitlan, a town known for its spiritual traditions and Mayan heritage. You explore the local artisan market, then visit the Church and Convent of Santiago Apostle, a colonial structure built directly on top of a Mayan altar: a physical reminder of how two faiths merged in this region.
A live guide leads the entire day in either English or Spanish, and the boat transport connects all three towns. The tour runs about eight hours total. Bring a camera for the jetty at the start of the day, where the volcanoes surrounding the lake are most visible.

What do you actually do at the textile workshop in San Juan La Laguna?
The Mayan textile workshop shows you how local weavers work the loom and explains the meaning behind the patterns and colors in traditional designs. You watch the process and learn the symbolism, but the workshop itself is a demonstration and observation, not a hands-on weaving session.
Is lunch included in the tour price?
Lunch is not included. The tour provides a Guatemalan breakfast at the start and water transport between towns, but you'll need to arrange or purchase lunch on your own during the stops.
How do you get from Panajachel to the other towns?

What is the Church of Santiago Apostle actually built on?
The Church and Convent of Santiago Apostle in Santiago Atitlan was constructed on top of a Mayan altar, making it a visible symbol of religious and cultural syncretism in the region.
