The experience
You're picked up from your hotel in Panajachel and taken to the boat dock, where you board for the crossing to San Juan la Laguna. The boat ride itself is part of the experience: Lake Atitlan sits in the highlands surrounded by volcanic peaks and the towns that dot its shore. Once in San Juan la Laguna, a guide walks you through the steps of traditional textile work: how cotton is extracted, spun by hand, dyed using artisan methods, and woven into cloth. You'll see the process happen and have a chance to try your hand at it. Afterward, you visit a small chocolate factory to learn how cacao figured into Mayan life and trade, then taste chocolate and cocoa rum made on-site.
At midday you transfer by boat to Santiago Atitlan, a larger town with deeper historical roots. Lunch is at a local restaurant where you choose from dishes of the regional cuisine. This is not a set menu but your own selection from what's offered. In the afternoon, the guide takes you to the 16th-century Catholic church at the center of town and to the shrine of Maximon, a figure central to Tz'utujil Mayan spirituality where Catholic and indigenous beliefs converge. The boat returns you to Panajachel by early afternoon, finishing around 4 PM.
The tour is led by members of the local indigenous community, so the explanations come from people whose families have practiced these crafts and traditions for generations. Both English and Spanish are spoken by the guide, and children from age one are welcome on board.
