The experience

How much elevation and terrain can you handle in a day? The Upper Mayan Trail answers that question fast. You start at the Adventure Center in Antigua, then climb into the mountains above Lake Atitlan on a route that crosses maize fields, coffee plantations, old growth forest, and finally cloud forest as the altitude builds. The hike is strenuous, the operator flags it plainly, and the terrain shifts under your feet as you move through different ecosystems.

The route passes through Santa Cruz la Laguna and reaches a sacred Mayan site where shamans perform fire ceremonies. You have the chance to witness the ritual if conditions allow. From there, the trail descends into Solola, where you spend time exploring the indigenous market: smaller and far less crowded than Chichicastenango, with the same authentic goods and the same energy. After the market, a minivan transfers you to Panajachel, then back to your Antigua hotel. The whole day runs 10 to 12 hours from pickup to drop-off.

A live guide in English or Spanish walks the trail with you and explains the landscape, the crops, the cultural sites and the Mayan traditions along the way. Transport by air-conditioned minivan or coach is included, as is hotel pickup from centrally located Antigua hotels. You bring water, sun protection and sturdy hiking boots. The operator asks you to dress for all weather since the hike runs rain or shine.
