The experience

The hike starts at 8 a.m. from Old Town Outfitters Shop in Antigua, where you fill water bottles and can pick up any last-minute gear. A one-hour drive takes you to La Soledad, a mountain village on the Pacific slope ridge of Acatenango, and from there the real climb begins. The ascent unfolds in four distinct phases, each roughly an hour, moving through temperate coniferous forest, tropical dry forest, and finally the storm-beaten tree line. The terrain shifts under your feet as you gain elevation, and by the time you reach the campsite, you've crossed ecosystems that would take days to walk through on flat ground.

Camp sits just below the tree line with sweeping views of the Antigua valley and a direct line of sight to Volcán Fuego. After setting up your tent, the evening is yours to rest or watch the volcano. Fuego is very active. The eruptions are visible at night, a show of fire and ash that plays out while you're sitting at 3,750 meters. Dinner is freshly prepared at camp, with hot tea and coffee to warm you through the cold night. The sleeping bag and pad are rated for near-freezing temperatures, which is what you'll get at that elevation.

Day two starts early. The final push to the summit is steep and takes about 2 hours, timed so you reach the top just before sunrise. Volcán Fuego's last eruptions of the night often happen at dawn, and from the summit of Acatenango you're positioned to see them. After the summit, you hike back down to camp for breakfast, then descend to La Soledad village and the drive back to Antigua.
