The experience
If you're in Antigua with two days free and no car, this tour handles the logistics: minibus pickup from the Pachamama Tours office at 7:30 AM, a 45–60 minute shared ride to the trailhead at La Soledad, and the climb itself via a route that skips the most exhausting section. That shorter path means you arrive at the 3,640-meter basecamp with energy left to enjoy the afternoon and, if you choose, take the separate 3.5-hour hike to watch Fuego's eruptions from 200 meters away at 3,768 meters. The operator has been running this route under new management and holds a 4.7/5 rating across more than 100 reviews, with travelers consistently noting the attentive guides and the quality of the meals.
Basecamp is a set of new wooden cabins that sleep up to nine guests, each with insulation, a sleeping bag and glass doors facing the volcano, so you can watch Fuego from bed. Dinner is hot and hearty. Breakfast comes after the optional 4 AM summit attempt. The summit hike takes about 45 minutes to reach the top, weather permitting, and you descend for breakfast before the group heads back down to Antigua, arriving around 11 AM. The summit only happens if at least half the group agrees to go. If you want to summit regardless, a private guide costs an extra Q700. All gear is provided (jackets, gloves, hats, headlamp and two liters of water), and your guide speaks basic Spanish and English (a bilingual guide is available for an additional cost).
The Fuego hike is not included in the base price and departs at 4 PM from basecamp. It costs Q300 per person or Q700 for a solo traveler. It requires intermediate fitness, water, a jacket and a headlamp, and you'll spend 30 minutes watching the eruptions. For safety, you cannot approach Fuego alone. Every booking supports fair local employment and the educational work of I am Hope GT, the operator's community partner.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you're staying in Antigua without a car and want to climb Acatenango in two days. The minibus pickup from town and the shorter forest route mean you spend less time on the hardest sections and more time resting at camp. A real advantage if you're deciding between this and a longer, more demanding version of the same mountain.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 6 days before the start.
What's the hike like on day one if I take the shorter route?
The shorter private path avoids the most demanding section of the mountain, making the ascent more scenic and less exhausting than the standard route. You arrive at basecamp with more energy to rest, eat and enjoy the volcano views in the afternoon, or add the Fuego hike if you want.
Can I watch Fuego erupt from basecamp, or do I have to hike to it?
Fuego is visible from the cabins, but the dedicated hike takes you to 3,768 meters, just 200 meters from the volcano's active crater, for a much closer and more dramatic view. That hike is a separate 3.5-hour round trip departing at 4 PM and costs Q300 per person. It's not included in the base tour price.
What if the weather is bad on the morning of the summit hike?
Summit access depends entirely on weather and safety conditions. Some departures do not reach the top. At least half the group must agree to attempt it. If you want to go to the summit regardless of other guests' choices, you can arrange a private guide for an additional Q700.
How do I get from Antigua to the trailhead?
Pachamama Tours provides a shared minibus from their office in Antigua, departing at 7:30 AM on the morning of the hike. The ride to La Soledad takes 45–60 minutes, and the climb to basecamp follows from there.
What's included in the tour price, and what costs extra?
The base price covers private transportation, all gear, entrance fees, lunch, dinner, breakfast, a headlamp and two liters of water. The Fuego volcano hike (Q300 per person or Q700 solo), a bilingual guide and a private summit guide are available at additional cost.
