Acatenango Volcano Hike: 2-Day Sunrise from 13,000 Feet
You sleep at the crater and wake to the sunrise.
A 2-day guided hike of Acatenango volcano in Guatemala's Central Highlands, starting from Antigua. The route climbs to 3,976 meters (13,000 feet) with an overnight stay in a shared cabin near the summit, meals and park fees included. A guide in English or Spanish leads the group; children from age 8 are welcome. The second morning brings a sunrise view of Lake Atitlán and three neighboring volcanoes from the top.
Step-by-step itinerary
Hike and view volcanoes
- Hike or 4x4 to volcano camp
- Enjoy views of volcano fire eruptions
- See volcano water and pacaya from camp
- Optional approach to volcano fire crater
- Watch sunrise from Acatenango summit
- Observe Lake Atitlan and three volcanoes
The Experience
The hike runs roughly 6 hours on day one, depending on the group's pace—or you can arrange a 4x4 vehicle for part of the route at an extra cost. You climb with a guide who stays with the group throughout, carrying water and snacks along the way. By afternoon you reach the camp near the crater, where you'll sleep in a shared cabin. Meals are provided both days, and the operator supplies jackets, hats and gloves for the altitude.
Day two starts before dawn. You walk to the summit in time to watch the sunrise from 3,976 meters, with views across Lake Atitlán and the silhouettes of three volcanoes—Fire, Water and Pacaya—visible in the distance. On clear mornings you can also see the glow and smoke from the Fire volcano's crater. The descent takes the morning, and you're back in Antigua by early afternoon.
A guide in English or Spanish accompanies the entire 2 days. The operator notes that moderate fitness is needed for the altitude and the sustained climbing, and the hike is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, cardiovascular concerns or pregnancy. Children from age 8 can join. If you want to approach the Fire volcano's crater itself, that's an optional add-on with its own cost and depends on seasonal conditions.
