Pacaya Volcano Hike from Antigua: Active crater up close
Climb an active volcano and roast marshmallows over its heat vents
A half-day guided hike on Pacaya Volcano, an active crater near Antigua, takes you up volcanic slopes for a two-hour climb with views of lava flows and ash. Hotel pickup is included, and you pay the Q100 National Park entrance fee on arrival. The hike is the most accessible active volcano experience in Guatemala, though it requires moderate fitness and closed-toe shoes; you cannot reach the summit due to current safety regulations.

- Take a short break
- Descend the volcano

The Experience
You get picked up from your Antigua hotel and ride 1.5 hours to the base of Pacaya Volcano. After paying the Q100 National Park entrance fee (bring exact change), the two-hour climb begins. Pacaya is actively volcanic — you may see short lava flows or hear ash and rock erupt — but the summit is off-limits for safety reasons. The hike follows volcanic rock terrain, and you'll have time to roast marshmallows in the heat vents before heading back down. If the full climb feels like too much, you can rent a horse on site to ride up, down, or both.
The route is steep and uphill the whole way, so wear closed-toe shoes and bring sun and rain protection. Higher elevations are cold, so pack a warm sweater. Bring bottled water and a snack; the air-conditioned vehicle waits to take you back to Antigua around 1pm (morning departure) or 8pm (afternoon departure). A live Spanish-speaking guide leads the hike and enforces the safety regulations that keep you away from the most active zones.
What’s included
- Air-conditioned vehicle pickup and drop-off at your Antigua hotel.
- a live Spanish-speaking guide for the duration of the hike.
- access to the volcanic slopes and heat vents where you can roast marshmallows.

How long is the actual hike up Pacaya Volcano?
The climb takes approximately two hours uphill. You'll have a short break before heading back down, and the full tour from pickup to drop-off in Antigua is about seven hours.
Can I reach the summit of Pacaya Volcano?
No. Due to current safety regulations, the summit is off-limits. Pacaya is an active volcano that spews hot ash, rock, and lava, and authorities do not permit hikers to go directly to the top. You'll get close enough to see lava flows and erupting ash from designated safe zones.
What if I don't want to hike the whole way up?
You can rent a horse on site from local handlers to ride up the volcano, down it, or both. The horse rental is negotiated directly with the handlers on arrival and is not included in the tour price.
What should I bring on this hike?
Wear closed-toe shoes and bring sun and rain protection. Pack a warm sweater because it gets cold at higher elevations. Bring bottled water and a snack. You'll also need to bring local currency (Q100 in exact change) for the National Park entrance fee.
Is this tour available as a private or shared experience?
You can book either a private hike with your own guide or a shared hike with other travelers. Both options include hotel pickup from Antigua and the same route and inclusions.
What happens if Pacaya erupts while I'm on the hike?
Pacaya is an active volcano, and you visit at your own risk. The guide will enforce safety regulations and keep the group in designated zones away from the most dangerous areas. If volcanic activity becomes unsafe, the guide will direct the group to descend.
