The experience
The tour picks you up in Antigua and drives you to the lake's edge, where the jetty opens onto views of the water and the volcanoes beyond: the first stop for photos. From there, water transport takes you to Panajachel for a traditional Chapin breakfast, the meal that sets the day's rhythm and taste.
San Juan La Laguna is where the hands-on part begins. You enter a Mayan textile workshop and learn what each pattern means in the weaving, then visit a melipon bee operation to understand how these stingless bees fit into the local ecosystem. The Calle de los Umbreros and Calle de los Hatros (the Street of Umbrellas and Street of Hats) run through town in bright, handmade color. You walk both. A short stop in San Pedro La Laguna at Hummingbird Street lets you rest or browse local crafts before the final leg.
Santiago Atitlan closes the day. Its artisan market fills with woven goods, textiles and local work. The Church and Convent of Santiago Apostle stands where a Mayan altar once was, a visible layering of two faiths. Water transport and ground transport back to Antigua take up the return, with the guide traveling the whole route. The day runs fourteen hours door to door.
