The experience

I opened my eyes to this weird mix of mist and sunlight just outside Antigua. One of those mornings where you’re not sure if you need sunglasses or a sweater. Our driver, Miguel, was already grinning like he knew something we didn’t. First stop: Hobbitenango. I’d seen photos but walking up that path, smelling wet earth and woodsmoke, it felt way more surreal. There’s this giant swing. I’m not kidding, it actually swings out over the valley. I hesitated (my stomach did too), but our guide Ana just laughed and gave it a push. My shoes kicked at nothing but air for a second and all I could hear was wind and my own laugh echoing back. Didn’t expect to feel that free.

We wandered through these little Hobbit houses: round doors, mossy roofs, tiny windows peeking out from the hillside. Some kids were playing hide-and-seek behind one of them. Their mom tried to coax them out in Spanish but they weren’t having it. Ana pointed out the “Hand of the King” lookout: basically a giant hand sculpture reaching into the sky (I still don’t know how they built that). I tried saying “Hobbitenango” with a Guatemalan accent and totally butchered it. Ana just shook her head and smiled.

After that, we drove maybe 10 minutes up to Altamira. The air changed again: cooler, sharper somehow, and you could smell pine needles crushed underfoot. The view hit me right away: three volcanoes lined up in the haze, like someone painted them there on purpose. People were taking photos but honestly I just stood there for a while because words didn’t really work for what I was seeing. There’s an optional canopy bike thing if you want more adrenaline (I watched some guy pedal across mid-air while his girlfriend screamed below, nope). Then we all piled back into the van, tired in that good way where your face hurts from smiling too much.
