The experience

The tour moves through five villages in four to five hours, stopping at three main plazas and the working sites where locals carry out their daily trades. You start in San Juan del Obispo, where the Archbishop's Palace is available to visit, then move to a family home where chocolate is prepared by hand. You can taste it if you choose, though it's not part of the package. From there the route passes through the colorful plazas of San Pedro Las Huertas, San Miguel Escobar and Ciudad Vieja, each one a snapshot of village life.

Two stops anchor the experience. In San Pedro Las Huertas, you see the public laundry station where residents wash clothes by hand, and the Esquisuchil tree that marks the plaza. The route then detours to San Miguel Dueñas and its macadamia nut farm, where you can see how the crop is grown and processed. The final stop is San Antonio Aguas Calientes, where you enter a weaving workshop and watch the process unfold on the loom, and you have the chance to buy woven goods directly from the makers.

A live guide who speaks English or Spanish leads the entire route and explains the history, importance and daily life of each town as you move through them. Hotel pickup is included, and you get a small bottle of water to carry through the day.
