Step-by-step itinerary

Visit Iximche Mayan Ruins from Antigua

  • Leave hotel in Antigua
  • Drive 1.5 hours to Iximche ruins
  • Explore pyramids, palaces, and ball courts
  • Guided visit of archaeological site
  • Return transfer to Antigua

The experience

Iximché sits in the highlands west of Antigua, a 90-minute drive through countryside that takes you deeper into the region the Kaqchikel Maya ruled from 1470 until the Spanish conquest. The site itself spans pyramids, palaces, ball courts and residential structures: all restored enough to read the layout of a functioning capital, not just scattered stones. Your guide walks you through the layout and explains what each structure was, how the Maya used the ball courts, and what the arrangement tells you about how the kingdom organized itself.

The tour runs four to five hours total, which covers the drive both ways and the guided time on site. You travel in a private vehicle with a bilingual guide (English and Spanish are standard, French, German or Italian are available on request with advance notice and additional cost). Pickup happens at your hotel in Antigua, so you don't arrange separate transport or navigate to a meeting point.

Wear walking shoes, a hat and sunglasses. You'll be on your feet moving between structures, and the highlands sun is direct. Bring a camera. The site is open and the restored buildings photograph well from multiple angles. The minimum group is two adults. If you're traveling solo, contact the operator to confirm availability or to arrange a group booking.

What’s included

  • Private transportation from your Antigua hotel to Iximché and back.
  • a licensed bilingual guide for the archaeological site visit.
