Discover the unique flavors of Mayan coffee in a story-rich tasting experience

A coffee tasting and brunch class in Antigua where you taste three specialty coffees from Mayan regions, learn their origins and flavor profiles, then choose one to brew using the pour-over method and pair with a dish from ITZAM's Mayan menu. The experience runs about 90 minutes with a live guide in English or Spanish, and a 15-year minimum age applies.

The Experience

The morning starts in the heart of Antigua with three specialty coffees laid out for tasting. You explore the aromas and flavors of each one, learning where it comes from in the Mayan regions and what makes it distinct. After the tasting, you pick your favorite and watch it brewed fresh using a pour-over method—the ritual itself is part of the experience. ITZAM, ranked #31 among coffeeshops in North and Central America and the Caribbean, built this space to celebrate ancestral culture through every flavor and story, so the setting and the guide's commentary ground the tasting in the history and significance of coffee to Mayan tradition.

Once the coffee is ready, you move to brunch. The menu draws from local Mayan dishes: Chilaquiles with slow-cooked shredded beef in red sauce and black corn chips; the Maya Tartine, a sourdough layered with eggs, chili oil, roasted corn, avocado and smoked pork belly; Mountain Breakfast, a bowl of white beans in tomato and pumpkin seed sauce with pork and eggs; or the Chuchito Soufflé, an oven-baked corn dough tamal with meat. You choose what appeals to you and enjoy it alongside the coffee you selected.

The whole experience unfolds over 90 minutes. A live guide leads the tasting in either English or Spanish, so you follow comfortably in whichever language works for you. The minimum age is 15. Public transportation options are available nearby if you're traveling without a car, and service animals are welcome.
