The experience

You're picked up from your Athens hotel or residence in a private sedan or minivan depending on group size, and driven south across the isthmus toward the Peloponnese. The first stop is the Corinth Canal itself: a narrow waterway cut through limestone in the late 19th century that separates the Greek mainland from the peninsula. The canal was a 2,000-year-old dream: before its construction, ships sailing between the Aegean and Adriatic had to circle the entire Peloponnese, adding 185 nautical miles to their journey. You'll see how it transformed ancient shipping and still carries vessels today.

From there you move to Ancient Corinth, where the Temple of Apollo stands with its rare monolithic columns, built around 560 BCE. The Bema (a large elevated platform in the Roman Forum) is where the Apostle Paul was brought for trial in 52 AD on charges of illegal teaching. The proconsul Gallio refused to judge what he saw as a religious dispute. The site later became a Byzantine church. You'll also visit the Agora, a 160-meter rectangular marketplace ringed with shops and temples, and the Archaeological Museum of Ancient Corinth. The fortress of Acrocorinth rises above the ancient city, a monolithic rock that commanded the isthmus and served as a last line of defense for southern Greece.

Mycenae comes next: the Bronze Age citadel of King Agamemnon, one of the major centers of Greek civilization in the second millennium BC. The Lion Gate, erected around 1250 BC, is the sole surviving monumental sculpture from the Mycenaean period and the only relief image from Bronze Age Greece that was known to classical writers before modern archaeology rediscovered it. The gate's two opposing lions carved in relief sit above the entrance. Inside the citadel walls you'll see the Treasury of Atreus, a beehive tomb built around 1250 BC with a stone lintel weighing 120 tons: the largest in the world. The Cyclopean walls surrounding the acropolis are massive and well preserved.

The day ends in Nafplio, the first capital of the newly independent Greek state between 1823 and 1834. The old town's cobbled streets wind past neoclassical mansions, Venetian buildings and Ottoman fountains: layers of Frankish, Venetian and Turkish rule visible in the architecture. Syntagma Square sits at the center. Palamidi fortress crowns a 216-meter hill to the east. The winding stair has 999 steps (locals insist on the exact count), and from the top you see the Argolic Gulf, the city and the surrounding country. Bourtzi, a small fortress on an islet in the harbor, takes less than ten minutes to reach by boat and frames the classic Nafplio sunset. Lunch is at a traditional tavern by the sea, though the meal cost is separate from the tour price. Your driver returns you to your hotel or residence in Athens by evening.
