The Experience

The first thing I remember is the wind—warm and kind of salty—whipping up as we stopped at the edge of the Corinth Canal. Our driver, Nikos, told us to look down (I almost didn’t; heights aren’t my thing), and there it was: this narrow blue ribbon cutting straight through stone. Ships looked like toys. Someone nearby dropped a coin and we all watched it disappear, no splash, just gone. The canal’s older than it looks, by the way—Nikos explained how it turned the Peloponnese into an island. He seemed proud of that.

Driving on toward Ancient Olympia took longer than I expected, but there’s something about watching olive groves blur past that makes time feel different. When we finally got out, the air smelled dusty-sweet and cicadas were already making a racket. Walking through those old stones—the Temple of Zeus, bits of columns everywhere—I kept thinking about how many feet have worn these paths down. We saw where the Olympic flame is still lit every year. I tried to imagine crowds cheering in that old stadium; honestly, it made me want to run (I didn’t). Our guide outside the site—she wasn’t allowed inside but she knew her stuff—pointed out the Philippeion and told us stories about Alexander the Great’s family. I probably mispronounced half the names.

Lunch was in a little place nearby—nothing fancy but real Greek food: tomatoes that actually taste like tomatoes, feta so creamy you could eat it with a spoon. I spilled some olive oil on my shirt; nobody cared. There was laughter from another table—maybe locals? It felt good to just sit for a while after walking all morning. The Archaeological Museum was next; cool inside and full of things people once held in their hands thousands of years ago. Hermes with baby Dionysus—I’d seen photos but seeing it up close is different.

On the drive back to Athens I watched the light change over hills and thought about how much history fits into one day trip from Athens to Ancient Olympia. You can read about these places forever but standing there… well, you feel small in a good way.
