The Experience

The tour leaves Athens with hotel or cruise pickup and heads to the Corinth Canal first—the 4-mile waterway cut through the isthmus, 80 meters high and 27 meters wide, finished in 1896 after decades of work. The heart of the day is the archaeological site: the Temple of Apollo, the only temple of Apollo positioned so the sun reaches it from every angle (fitting for the god of light); the Ancient Agora, the marketplace where daily life unfolded; and the Bema of St. Paul, the stone platform where Paul stood and preached in 51 A.D. You'll also see the Erastus inscription and the remains of what is believed to be the first Christian church Paul founded in Corinth. The museum holds statues, Roman emperors' portraits, and 265 amphoras in different Greek styles—the pottery that was the backbone of Corinthian trade.
