The Experience

We slid into the city just as the morning traffic was waking up — our driver, Yannis, had that calm Athens confidence I wish I could bottle. He pointed out the Parliament building (the guards in those pom-pom shoes!) before we even realized we’d arrived. There’s something about seeing the Acropolis from the car window for the first time — it’s almost too familiar from photos, but then you catch a bit of sunlight on the stones and it’s suddenly real. We stopped for coffee near Plaka; I tried to order in Greek and got a grin from the barista. The air smelled faintly of orange blossoms and exhaust — classic city mix.

Yannis isn’t a licensed guide so he couldn’t come inside the monuments with us, but he knew where to drop us for the least walking (my knees were grateful). At the Temple of Olympian Zeus, he told us how locals used to sneak picnics there before stricter rules came in. I kept thinking about that as we wandered through the columns — you can almost imagine someone unwrapping feta under all that marble. I still think about that view of Athens from Lycabettus Hill — though honestly, my memory’s mostly flavored with honey and diesel fumes now.
