The Experience

The first thing I noticed wasn’t the Parthenon—it was the sound of shoes scuffing marble as we climbed the Acropolis. Our guide, Yannis, pointed out where the ancient steps had been worn smooth by centuries of feet. The air smelled faintly dusty and warm, and I kept squinting at the sunlight bouncing off white stone. I’d seen photos of Athens forever but standing there with my hand on cool marble made it feel different—more real, somehow. I tried to imagine those old philosophers sitting exactly where we stood.

Afterwards, we wound down narrow streets into Plaka. It’s busy but not in an overwhelming way—just people laughing outside cafés, shopkeepers waving hello, bits of music floating out from somewhere behind a blue door. The flea market in Monastiraki was chaos in the best sense: piles of old records, stacks of books in Greek (I can’t read them but still wanted to touch every cover), and the smell of grilled meat drifting over everything. We stopped for lunch at a grill place tucked behind a souvenir stand—souvlaki and fries with oregano that stuck to my fingers. I probably ate too fast but honestly didn’t care.

Later we drove past the Parliament building just as the guards changed—those Evzones with their pompom shoes moving in perfect slow motion. Someone in our group whispered that they practice for months to get it right. The sun was higher now; Athens gets this bright haze over its rooftops by midday. We stopped at Mount Lycabettus for a view that made me pause (and yeah, take too many photos). You can see all the way to Piraeus port if you look hard enough. There’s something quieting about seeing so much city spread out below you—I still think about that view sometimes when my own city feels too small.
