The Experience

Maria, our driver, greeted us at the hotel with a warm “Kalimera!” and a bottle of cold water (it was already heating up by 9am). She asked if we’d slept — I hadn’t really, too excited — and then we were off through Athens’ morning traffic. I liked how she pointed out little things you’d never notice: the bakery where her father buys koulouri every Sunday, or why people tap their coffee cups three times for luck. That first ride set the tone. Not rushed, just… local.

The Acropolis felt bigger than I expected. We climbed slowly (I definitely needed Maria’s tip about good shoes), passing families chatting in Greek and couples taking selfies with the Parthenon in the background. The marble was warm under my hand — kind of smooth but not slippery — and there was this faint smell of pine from somewhere below. At the top, I tried to picture what it must’ve looked like two thousand years ago. Honestly? My mind wandered between awe and hunger. The Parthenon is right there but also so are your feet hurting. Maybe that’s part of it.

Later in Syntagma Square, we watched the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier do their slow-motion march. It’s almost hypnotic — everyone got quiet for a minute when they switched places. Then back into city noise: horns, someone selling roasted chestnuts near Monastiraki (I bought some; burned my tongue). Lunch was in Plaka at a tiny taverna Maria recommended — grilled octopus and tomatoes that actually tasted like tomatoes. She laughed when I tried to order in Greek (“You sound like my cousin from Chicago”).

I still think about that view from Lycabettus Hill — all those white buildings spilling toward the sea, haze blurring them together. You don’t realize how huge Athens is until you see it from up high. The sun was starting to drop behind us but nobody seemed in a hurry; even Maria just leaned on the hood and let us take it in for as long as we wanted.
