The experience

You're picked up from your hotel, airport, or port in a private air-conditioned car and driven straight to the Acropolis, the geographically and spiritually highest point of ancient Athens. Your driver, fluent in English and knowledgeable about the city's history, stays with the vehicle while you walk the Propylaea gateway, the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the Temple of Athena Nike, and the Theatre of Dionysus on the slopes below. Free time at the Acropolis Museum lets you see the sculptures and artifacts at your own pace. The driver can answer questions about what you've seen when you return to the car.

From there, you pass the Panathenaic Stadium (built of Pentelic marble and home to the first modern Olympic Games), drive up Mount Lycabettus for panoramic views of the city, and see Hadrian's Arch and the Temple of Olympian Zeus from the car. You stop at Syntagma Square to watch the Evzones guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, then continue past the Parliament Building, the Academy of Athens, and the National Library of Greece. Lunch happens in Monastiraki: a traditional Greek tavern with your choice of Greek food, or you can skip it and explore the neighborhood's shops instead. The route also takes in the Ancient Agora, where democracy was born, and the old neighborhood of Plaka with its neoclassical streets and archaeological sites clustered around the Acropolis slopes.

The car is equipped with WiFi and bottled water. Your driver is not a licensed tour guide and will not enter archaeological sites with you, but they speak fluent English and have deep knowledge of Athens' history.
