The Experience

The drive south from Athens takes you across the Corinth Canal first—a 6.4-kilometre cut through limestone so narrow (21.4 metres wide at its base) that most modern ships cannot pass through it. You stop at a high vantage point to watch vessels navigate the channel below, then continue to Ancient Corinth itself, roughly 5 kilometres from the modern city. Your driver provides commentary throughout but does not enter the archaeological sites; you walk them at your own pace.

Ancient Corinth sprawls across the foothills of Acrocorinth, the rocky acropolis that once served as the city's last line of defense. The site includes the Temple of Apollo (built in 550 BC), the Fountain of Peirene, the Agora, the Theatre, and a Basilica, along with other temples and structures excavated since the 1930s. The Archaeological Museum of Ancient Corinth sits within the site itself and holds the finds from those digs. Acrocorinth rises above it all—a monolithic rock that commanded the Isthmus and made Corinth one of the largest and most powerful city-states in ancient Greece, with a population of 90,000 by 400 BC.
