The Experience

The day starts with pickup from your Athens hotel, airport, or Piraeus port in a private air-conditioned vehicle. The drive to Meteora takes about 4.5 hours, giving you time to settle in and hear the driver's commentary on the landscape and history ahead. You arrive at the rock formations—massive natural pillars that rise abruptly from the plain, split by ancient earthquakes and shaped by millions of years of wind and water. The six surviving monasteries (of an original 24) sit on top of these rocks, built by hermits seeking isolation and now UNESCO-protected as one of the largest Eastern Orthodox monastic complexes in the world.

You walk around the rock formations and enter up to three of the monasteries, choosing which ones interest you most. The sites require modest dress—women are asked to wear long skirts and long sleeves, and if you don't have them, a skirt is provided at the entrance. The driver waits outside and can answer questions about what you've seen when you return. After the monasteries, you have free time for lunch at a traditional Greek tavern in Kastraki, a village nestled near the rocks, or to browse the local shops. If you booked the tour with lunch included, a Greek traditional meal is arranged; if you chose the option without food, you pick where and what to eat.

On the return journey to Athens, the route passes through Thermopylae, where the driver points out the monument to King Leonidas and the 300 Spartans who made their stand against the invading Persian army in 480 BCE. The drive back takes another 4.5 hours, and you arrive in Athens in the late afternoon. Bottled water and WiFi are available on board throughout the day.
