The Experience
The bus leaves Athens Railway Station at 7:30 am and reaches Kalambaka around 12:30 pm, giving you time to watch the Greek countryside roll past. A coastal brunch stop breaks the journey—meals are optional and can be ordered through the app. Once in Kastraki village, you'll have lunch and a rest before the afternoon climbing begins.
You'll visit three of Meteora's six monasteries. The Great Meteoron is the largest and oldest, built atop a towering rock and named for the word "meteoro"—suspended in the air. Varlaam Monastery, the second largest, sits on a rocky pinnacle and shows the 16th-century construction and the rope systems monks once used to haul materials up the cliff face. St. Stephen's Monastery requires no stairs, just a short walk across a bridge, making it accessible if climbing isn't comfortable; it holds relics of Saint Charalambos in its 18th-century cathedral. The hermit caves of Badovas are the day's quietest stop—remote cliffside shelters where you can see traces of the austere dwellings monks carved into the rock centuries ago.
The tour includes an audio guide that walks you through the history and stories of each site as you move through them. Climbing is part of the day—some monasteries require stairs, and the most challenging, Holy Trinity, has about 140 steps to reach the top. If stairs are difficult, you can wait at the parking area with benches while others climb. The bus departs Kalambaka at 5:35 pm and arrives back in Athens at 9:58 pm. An optional dinner stop at a coastal restaurant on the return gives you a chance to eat by the sea and watch the sunset.

Yes. The hermit caves of Badovas are included as a stop on the tour. These remote cliffside shelters show where early monks lived in solitude and offer insight into their austere, contemplative way of life.
