The Experience

You leave Athens heading south, crossing the Corinth Canal — a 6.4-kilometer cut through limestone so narrow (21 meters at its base) that you can see the steep walls from the overlook and watch vessels navigate the passage below. The canal separates the Peloponnese from mainland Greece, and from this vantage point the geography that shaped ancient trade and warfare becomes visible. Your driver, fluent in English and grounded in the region's history, travels with you the whole day and can answer questions about what you are standing in front of, though they do not enter the archaeological sites themselves.

Ancient Corinth comes first — a city-state that was one of Greece's largest in 400 BC, with a population of 90,000, and later became the Romans' provincial capital. You walk the agora, the Temple of Apollo (built in 550 BC), the Fountain of Peirene and other structures the Archaeological Museum displays alongside. From there the route moves to Mycenae, the Bronze Age citadel of King Agamemnon. The Lion Gate — two carved lions in heraldic pose above the entrance, erected around 1250 BC — is the sole surviving monumental sculpture from Mycenaean times and the only relief image from that era known to classical writers before modern archaeology found it. The Treasury of Atreus, a beehive tomb with a stone lintel weighing 120 tons, sits on the hillside; the Cyclopean walls and the Tomb of Clytemnestra complete the circuit. Most visible monuments date to the site's peak between 1350 and 1200 BC, when it dominated southern Greece, Crete and the Cyclades.

Epidaurus holds the theater — considered the most perfect ancient Greek theater for acoustics and aesthetics, built in the 4th century and unmodified during Roman times. The sanctuary was dedicated to Asclepius, god of medicine, and rivaled Olympia and Delphi as a major cult site. The Temple of Asclepius and the Archaeological Museum sit within the sanctuary grounds. After Epidaurus, you have free time in Nafplio, the country's most picturesque town, with Venetian architecture, cobbled squares and two castles — the Acronauplia (the oldest fortification, now a hotel complex) and the Palamidi fortress on a 216-meter hill with 913 steps winding up from the town. The harbor holds the Bourtzi, a Venetian castle in the water. Lunch, with a Greek traditional food option, happens here; you can eat, walk the back streets or sit by the water before the return to Athens.

The tour runs 9 to 10 hours total. Transport is air-conditioned; bottled water and WiFi are on board. Site entry fees — for Ancient Corinth, Mycenae, Epidaurus and their museums — are purchased at each location. A licensed tour guide can be requested at checkout if available. Infants sit on an adult's lap, or specialized infant seats are available. The tour suits all fitness levels, though Palamidi's 913 steps are optional.

Top questions

What is the Corinth Canal and why does it matter to this tour?

The Corinth Canal is a 6.4-kilometer waterway cut through the Isthmus of Corinth at sea level, only 21 meters wide at its base, separating the Peloponnese from mainland Greece. The tour stops at an overlook where you see the steep limestone walls and watch ships navigate the passage — it is the geographic gateway to the peninsula and the first stop on the day.

Do I need to pay extra for entry to the archaeological sites?

Site entry fees for Ancient Corinth, Mycenae, Epidaurus and their museums are purchased on arrival at each location, not included in the tour price. A licensed tour guide can be added at checkout if you want someone to accompany you inside the sites.

What makes the Theater of Epidaurus special?

The Theater of Epidaurus is considered the most perfect ancient Greek theater for both acoustics and aesthetics. Built in the 4th century BC on the sanctuary of Asclepius (god of medicine), it was never modified during Roman times and retains its original structure — a theatron, orchestra and skene — making it a rare intact example of Hellenistic theater design.

Will the driver enter the archaeological sites with me?

No. Your driver is not a licensed tour guide and does not enter the sites, but they are fluent in English and deeply knowledgeable about the history and can answer your questions throughout the day about what you are seeing.

How much time do I have in Nafplio?

You have free time in Nafplio for lunch, coffee, shopping or exploring the town's Venetian architecture, cobbled squares and harbors. The Palamidi fortress on the hill above town has 913 steps to climb if you want the view over the Argolic Gulf, but it is optional.

Is lunch included, and what are my options?

Lunch is not included in the base tour price but is available as an add-on with a Greek traditional food option. You eat in Nafplio during the free time there.
