The Experience

“That’s the Lion Gate,” said our guide, Maria, as we shuffled past weathered stones in Mycenae. I was still thinking about the Corinth Canal from earlier—how blue that water was under the morning sun. The bus ride from Athens felt like a blur of olive trees and little roadside shrines. At Epidaurus, Maria clapped her hands once in the middle of the theatre and the sound bounced right back to us—so clear it made us all laugh. Someone tried it too (not me), but only got a dull thud. There’s something about seeing these places with someone who knows every myth and stray cat on the way.

I’ll admit: I didn’t expect Olympia to feel so open. It’s just fields and columns now, but when you stand on that old track where athletes ran barefoot, you can almost hear the crowd—even though it’s mostly cicadas now. Lunch was simple—bread that crackled when you tore it, salty feta, tomatoes that actually taste like tomatoes. We stopped in Arachova later; I bought a scarf I probably didn’t need. The mountain air there is sharp and clean, not like Athens at all.

Delphi surprised me most. Our group wandered through ruins as clouds drifted low over the hills—Maria pointed out where the Oracle would have sat (I think she winked at me). The museum next door is packed with things dug up right here: bronze helmets, tiny statues, bits of pottery. You could spend hours staring at one thing and still miss half of it. That night in Kalambaka I barely slept; kept thinking about how old everything is here.

Meteora… honestly hard to describe without sounding dramatic. Monasteries perched on stone pillars so high they look impossible—like someone just set them down by hand. The climb up is slow (lots of steps), but inside it’s quiet except for footsteps on cool stone floors and a faint smell of incense. On the drive back to Athens we stopped by Thermopylae for a quick photo—I mostly remember how tired but content everyone looked on the bus after four days together.
