The Experience

The first thing I remember is the jolt of sunlight as we crossed the bridge over the Corinth Canal—those chalky cliffs just drop away so suddenly it’s almost dizzying. Our driver, Yannis, slowed down so we could lean out for photos (he laughed when my hat nearly flew off). The canal is narrow—much narrower than I pictured—and there was this faint smell of salt and engine oil drifting up from the boats below. I didn’t expect to feel so small standing over that slice of blue water cutting through rock.

We reached Mycenae after maybe another half hour—hard to keep track because the landscape kept changing: olive trees, then dry hills, then those two conical peaks framing the ruins. Walking through the Lion Gate felt like stepping into some half-remembered myth; the stones are massive, rough under your palm. Yannis told us about Agamemnon and Homer (I only half remembered my high school Iliad), but it was seeing those beehive tombs in person that made it real. Inside, it was cool and echoey—my footsteps sounded strange. There’s a museum too, with gold masks and little clay figures; I lingered by a necklace that looked like something you could still wear today.

Nafplio came next—a jumble of Venetian balconies and pink bougainvillea spilling everywhere. We wandered narrow streets where old men sat outside cafés drinking coffee thick as mud. Lunch was grilled fish and tomatoes so sweet they tasted almost like fruit; our server insisted we try a tiny glass of ouzo “for courage” before climbing up to Palamidi fortress (I needed it). The view over the Argolic Gulf knocked me sideways—blue on blue on blue. There were kids jumping off the harbor wall, shouting in Greek. It felt alive in a way ancient ruins can’t be.

Epidaurus was our last stop—the theater sits in this bowl of green hills, cicadas buzzing loud enough to fill every silence. Yannis showed us how you can hear a coin drop from the stage all the way at the top row (he actually tried it; we all laughed when he missed). The sun was starting to dip by then and everything looked gold-edged and softer somehow. I still think about that quiet moment sitting on ancient stone steps, just listening.
