Summary

Trace Paul’s journey from Acropolis to ancient Corinth with stories and local insight

You’ll walk where Paul once stood on Mars Hill in Athens, hear stories at ancient Corinth’s Bema, gaze down into the dizzying depths of the Corinth Canal, and see early Christian mosaics up close — all with a local guide who brings these places to life. Expect small moments that linger long after you return home.

We were already halfway up the steps of Mars Hill when our guide, Yannis, paused and pointed out a faded plaque — apparently where Paul spoke to the Athenians. There was a group of teenagers laughing nearby, and I remember thinking how strange it felt to stand on the same rock as someone from 51 A.D., with the city buzzing below. The air smelled faintly of pine and car exhaust. Yannis told us about Saint Denis being baptized here — I tried repeating his Greek name and completely mangled it. He grinned anyway.

The drive out toward ancient Corinth was longer than I expected — maybe an hour? We passed olive groves and little roadside shrines, those blue-and-white ones. At the canal, everyone got quiet for a second; it’s deeper than you think, almost dizzying if you lean over. There’s this weird thrill seeing ships pass through something so old but still working. Yannis explained King George brought thousands of workers in 1882 just to dig it out. I kept picturing all those people sweating under the sun.

In ancient Corinth itself, we wandered around the ruins while Yannis told stories about Paul arguing with Romans at the Bema. The stones were warm under my hands — I don’t know why that detail sticks with me. We saw what’s left of Apollo’s temple (the light really does hit from every side), then walked past the old harbor where Priscilla and Aquila made tents by the water. There was a church nearby with mosaics — “The Vision of Paul,” Yannis said — and some kids playing soccer outside, which made me smile for no real reason.

I didn’t expect to feel much on a day trip from Athens to Corinth, but something about standing where people argued about gods two thousand years ago made everything feel less distant. Maybe it was just the sun or maybe it was hearing Yannis talk about his own grandmother lighting candles in these churches. Either way, I still think about that view from Mars Hill sometimes.
