The Experience
You know that feeling when you step somewhere you’ve only read about? That’s how it hit me at the Ancient Agora in Athens. Our driver, Nikos, pointed out where philosophers used to argue under the plane trees — apparently Paul just jumped right into those debates. It was busy, a bit noisy with school groups, but if you stand still for a second, you can almost hear all that old chatter mixing with the cicadas. The stones are warm under your hand, rough in places. I tried to picture Paul here, probably nervous or maybe not — who knows?
We made our way up to the Areopagus next, which is really just this big marble hill northwest of the Acropolis (my shoes nearly slid on those shiny steps). Nikos told us this was where Paul gave his famous speech to a council of thinkers — I could see why he chose it; there’s this wide view over Athens that makes everything feel smaller and bigger at once. A little breeze picked up and someone nearby was burning incense; it mixed with city smells in a way I didn’t expect. We stopped by the Church of Saint Dionysius too — tucked into Kolonaki, all cool stone and flickering candles inside. Not many tourists there.
The drive to Corinth takes about an hour — we passed olive groves and stray dogs snoozing in patches of sun. The Corinth Canal is wild to see in person (Nikos joked it’s “Greece’s shortcut nobody asked for until 1893”). At Kechrees port, there isn’t much left above water but you can see old Roman blocks if you look closely. I touched one — still damp from last night’s rain — thinking about ships coming in when Paul arrived here in 51 AD. There’s something lonely about ruins like that.
Ancient Corinth itself is sprawling and quiet except for a few other visitors and some crows arguing overhead. The Bema platform is still there; supposedly Paul stood trial right on those stones. You can walk through what’s left of the Agora marketplace — broken columns everywhere, wildflowers poking through cracks. The Temple of Apollo looms over everything; it feels older than time somehow. The museum nearby has these tiny carved figurines from centuries ago — I got stuck staring at them longer than I meant to.
Acrocorinth was our last stop, up a winding road with views that just keep going (I nearly dropped my phone trying to get a photo). The wind was stronger up there and you could smell wild herbs crushed underfoot. It’s hard not to think about all the layers of faith and power tangled together on that hilltop — I’m still sorting out how I felt standing there looking out over everything.
