The experience

You start from your hotel or cruise ship and head into Athens to the Areopagus, the rocky outcrop where Apostle Paul stood and addressed the Athenians about the "Unknown God." From there the tour moves to the Ancient Agora, where Paul's speech took place among the ruins of temples and public buildings that once anchored the city's intellectual and political life. The Church of St. Dionysius the Areopagite comes next: a site tied to Paul's first Athenian convert, a judge of the Areopagus who became one of the earliest Christians in Greece.

The drive south crosses the Isthmus of Corinth, where the 19th-century canal cuts through the rock to separate the Peloponnese from mainland Greece. You arrive at Kenchreai, the eastern port where Paul landed in 53 A.D., then move inland to the Temple of Apollo, one of the oldest Doric temples in the region, and the Glauke Fountain, steeped in myth. The Bema (an elevated platform in the Roman Forum) is where Paul preached and later stood trial before the Roman proconsul Gallio, an event recorded in Acts 18. Lunch is scheduled at a traditional taverna in the area. You cover the meal cost yourself. The Archaeological Museum of Corinth holds pottery, statues, and relics spanning prehistoric to Roman times.

Acrocorinth, the ancient fortified acropolis, closes the day with views across the landscape and layers of Greek, Byzantine, Frankish, and Ottoman ruins. The tour ends at the Apostolos Pavlos Church, a three-aisled basilica built in 1936 on the site of an earlier church Paul established. An English-speaking driver with historical knowledge leads the entire journey. The vehicle is air-conditioned with onboard Wi-Fi and bottled water. The full eight to nine hours includes travel time between locations.
