The Experience

I’ll admit, I was a little nervous about hopping on an e-bike in Nice — I haven’t ridden much since childhood. But as soon as we met our guide by the Promenade des Anglais, the nerves faded. The bikes were sturdy and honestly kind of fun — you barely have to pedal. There was this salty smell from the sea mixed with something sweet from a bakery nearby, and people just strolled past us like it was any other morning.

We zipped along the cycle lane past Old Nice, stopping at that big #ILOVENICE sign where everyone takes photos (yes, I caved too). Our guide, Camille, had this way of telling stories that made even the city’s tiny Statue of Liberty sound cool — apparently it’s a Bartholdi original? Didn’t expect that. At Cours Saleya Market she pointed out socca stands; I tried a piece straight from the pan. Crispy edges, warm inside — kind of smoky and nutty at once. I probably had chickpea flour on my face for half the ride after.

The climb up Castle Hill was nothing like I feared — e-bikes are magic for lazy legs. There was a moment at the top where everything went quiet except for distant gulls and some old men arguing in French down below. The view over the Bay of Angels is something I still think about when I need a mental break. Later we rolled down to the port where those little pointu boats bob next to giant yachts — such a weird contrast but somehow it fits here. Mont Boron gave us one last panorama before we headed back into city life. My legs didn’t even hurt (well… maybe a little).
