The Experience

You know that feeling when you’re not sure if you’re a tourist or just someone who got swept up in a city’s rhythm? That’s how I felt the second we climbed into the electric bike taxi in Nice. Our guide, Karim, grinned like he’d been waiting all morning for us—he actually pointed out my slightly melted gelato before we even started (I tried to hide it). We rolled through narrow streets of Old Town, where laundry hung above us and someone was definitely frying onions (socca maybe?). Karim told little stories about each corner—like how the Apollo statue once caused a scandal because of its size, which I still find funny. At Cours Saleya Flower Market, the air changed completely—suddenly it was lavender, citrus, and something sweet I couldn’t place. We tried socca right off a hot tray; crispy outside, soft inside, salty in a way that makes you want another bite. I probably had flour on my face for half the ride after that.

The climb up Castle Hill was quieter—just wind and those blue Mediterranean views that don’t look real in photos. Karim let us pause as long as we wanted (I think he knew we needed it). There’s this old stone wall where you can see Cap Ferrat stretching out; I leaned on it for a while just listening to gulls and distant traffic. It’s strange how busy Nice is below but up there it feels like time slows down. On the way back along Promenade des Anglais, people were sunbathing or skating past—the sea really is that turquoise color everyone talks about.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much during what’s technically called an “electric bike taxi tour of Nice,” but honestly Karim made it feel like hanging out with a friend who knows every shortcut and snack stand in town. He even pointed out his favorite café near Garibaldi Square (we went back later). The ride ended too soon for me—even now when I smell rosemary or hear seagulls at home, I think about that afternoon winding through Nice.
