The Experience
Early morning, the city’s already humming. Our guide, Hossam, met us right at the hotel lobby—big smile, easygoing. We drove out past Cairo’s traffic, windows down just a crack to catch that dry desert air. First stop: Dahshur. The Red Pyramid loomed up out of nowhere, its stones warm to the touch, and honestly, there weren’t many other tourists around. Hossam showed us how the Bent Pyramid got its odd shape—he even pointed out a spot where you could still see ancient graffiti if you squint. Saqqara was next. Walking up to the Step Pyramid, I could smell fresh bread from a nearby vendor—someone selling flatbread to workers. The tomb of Kagemni was quiet except for a couple of birds flitting in and out. Then, on to Giza. The Great Pyramid is massive, but it’s the Sphinx that really sticks with you—its face is so weathered, but those eyes feel like they’re watching. We tried some sweet hibiscus tea before heading back, a little dusty but happy.
The next day started with a stroll through the Egyptian Museum. It’s cooler inside than you’d expect, and there’s this faint scent of old paper and stone. Hossam led us straight to King Tut’s treasures—those gold sandals are much smaller than I imagined. The animal mummy room was a surprise; there’s even a mummified crocodile. Old Cairo felt like a different world—narrow lanes, church bells, incense hanging in the air. The Hanging Church has these creaky wooden floors, and at Ben Ezra Synagogue, we caught a quiet moment with a local caretaker who told us a story about hidden manuscripts. We finished up at Khan El Khalili bazaar, where I haggled for a brass lamp (not very well). Lunch both days was simple but tasty—lots of tahini and grilled chicken. By late afternoon, my feet were sore but my head was buzzing with stories.
