The experience
The Egyptian Museum sits in Tahrir Square, Cairo, and holds about 250,000 antique pieces spanning five thousand years of Egyptian history. The ground floor displays huge statues of kings, gods and goddesses. The upper floor houses smaller statues, jewels and the treasures of Tutankhamen. Your guide walks you through the 107 halls in chronological order, so the arc of ancient Egypt unfolds as you move through the building.
After the museum, you travel west across the Nile to Giza, where three pyramids rise from the plateau: built by Cheops, Chepren and Mycerinus around 2,500 BC as royal tombs for the pharaohs of the Old Kingdom. Khufu's pyramid alone used over 2 million blocks of stone. The Sphinx, a mythical statue with a lion's body and human head, guards the site. Your guide reveals the construction secrets and the purpose of the mortuary temples and causeways linked to each pyramid.
The camel ride lasts 30 minutes and happens at Giza. Lunch is provided during the day. An air-conditioned vehicle picks you up from your hotel in Cairo in the morning and returns you there at the end.
