The experience

Day one starts at the Giza Pyramids, where you stand in front of the last remaining wonder of the ancient world. For nearly 4,000 years these structures have posed the same questions: how were they built, and why? Your private Egyptologist walks you through what centuries of research have revealed: massive tombs constructed by tens of thousands of workers on the orders of pharaohs, and today they remain an awe-inspiring tribute to the organization and achievements of ancient Egypt. From there you move to the Great Sphinx, carved from bedrock during Khafre's reign and probably portraying his features, then to the Egyptian Museum in Downtown Cairo, where the glittering treasures of Tutankhamen and other pharaohs sit alongside the grave goods, mummies, jewelry and everyday objects of Egyptians whose names are lost to history. The day closes with a sunset felucca ride on the Nile, where you watch the local life of Egyptians as they gather in the evening.

Day two shifts to Islamic and Coptic Cairo. The Citadel of Saladin, seat of government and residence of Egypt's rulers for nearly 700 years, holds the Mosque of Muhammad Ali: an alabaster-white structure with domes upon domes, its interior twinkling with chandeliers and striped stone, the main dome a rich emerald green. Old Cairo, set within the walls of a fortress founded in the 6th century BC and expanded by the Roman Emperor Trajan, contains the oldest church, oldest mosque and oldest synagogue in the city, alongside the Coptic Museum. The day ends at Khan el-Khalili, a medieval-style souk of skinny lanes and small courtyards founded around the 13th century, where you walk through old Islamic architecture (mosques, houses, inns and cafés), and browse everything from soap to semiprecious stones. Lunch at a local restaurant and complimentary drinks at El Fishawy Cafe, the oldest café in the Middle East, are part of both days.

Your private Egyptologist picks you up from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle and returns you at the end of day two. All sightseeing admissions are included. Bottled water is provided throughout. The guide is available in English, Spanish, Italian, French and three additional languages.
