The experience

Your guide picks you up from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle and drives you to the Egyptian Museum, where you walk through one of the world's largest collections of Egyptian art. Over 250,000 genuine artifacts fill the galleries, spanning 5,000 years of the pharaonic period. The centerpiece is the Tutankhamun collection: gold, jewelry, and the gilded funeral mask that lay sealed in his tomb for 3,500 years before excavation in the 1920s. Your Egyptologist guide explains what you are standing in front of, so the scale and the age of it actually land.

From the museum you drive to Giza to see the pyramids themselves: the Great Pyramid of Cheops (one of the seven wonders of the ancient world), the middle pyramid of Chephren, and the smaller pyramid of Menkaure. The tour includes the Great Sphinx (a pharaoh's head on a lion's body, built during Chephren's reign), and the valley temple that belongs to his pyramid. You get time to take pictures and stand where these monuments actually are, not just pass them from a bus window.

The day ends at Khan el-Khalili bazaar, one of the oldest and most famous markets in the Middle East. You have an hour to walk the stalls selling brass-ware, copper, perfumes, leather, silver, gold, and antiques.
