experience

What’s the experience like?

Stepping out into Cairo’s morning buzz, I spotted our guide waiting with a sign—easy to find even in the swirl of hotel traffic. The drive to the Egyptian Museum took us past honking taxis and vendors selling sweet bread from carts. Inside, the museum felt cool and a bit hushed, even with all the visitors. Our Egyptologist guide didn’t rush; he pointed out tiny details on ancient statues and shared stories about the pharaohs that made them feel oddly familiar. Seeing Tutankhamun’s golden mask up close—honestly, it’s smaller than I expected—was something I’ll never forget. There’s this faint scent of old paper and stone in some rooms, like stepping back in time.

The pyramids at Giza hit differently when you’re standing right there, sand crunching under your shoes and the sun warming your shoulders. We walked around Cheops’ massive blocks, then over to Chephren and Mykerinus—each one has its own vibe. The Sphinx is just as mysterious as you’d hope, its face weathered but still watching over everything. Our guide explained how the valley temple was used for rituals, which made the place feel less like a photo stop and more like a real piece of history.

Later, we wandered through Khan El Khalili bazaar. It’s noisy, colorful, and smells like spices and roasting coffee beans. Shopkeepers call out greetings in Arabic and English, offering everything from silver bracelets to little glass bottles of perfume oil. I picked up a small brass lamp after haggling (badly) with a smiling vendor named Mahmoud—he even threw in a handful of dried hibiscus tea for free. By late afternoon, my feet were tired but my camera was full, and we headed back through Cairo’s evening traffic with the city lights flickering on.
