The Experience

The Giza Pyramids sit on the edge of Cairo, and most visitors stop there—they see Cheops (137 meters high, 230 meters on each side), walk around Chephren with its original smooth stone still clinging to the top, stand in front of the Great Sphinx carved straight out of the rocky outcrop, and then they leave. But the real weight of Egypt lives in the Egyptian Museum, in the building north of Tahrir Square, and that's where this full-day tour actually takes you. Your guide picks you up from your hotel in the morning, and you start at Giza.

The three main pyramids take up the first half of the day. Cheops is the only survivor of the Seven Great Wonders of the ancient world, and standing in front of it—even from a distance—the scale hits different than any photograph. You'll also see Mykerinus, the smallest of the three, partly dressed in pink granite slabs, and the Valley Temple before heading to lunch at a local Egyptian restaurant. The guide is a private Egyptologist, so you're not moving through a group; the timing is yours, and the explanations go as deep as you want them to.

After lunch, you cross into Cairo proper and into the Egyptian Museum. This is the richest collection of Egyptian antiquities in the world—over 5,000 years of pharaonic treasures in one rectangular building with a rotunda on the ground floor. The colossal statues of Ramses II are massive; you get the best view of them from the upper galleries looking down. But the thing that draws people is the Tutankhamun collection: gold and alabaster pieces from his tomb, and the golden mask itself (though many Tutankhamun treasures have traveled to museums around the world, this one has stayed in Cairo). The Royal Mummies Room is available for an additional cost if you want to see that. Your driver brings you back to your hotel when you're done, and the whole day is covered—water, transport, fees, guide, lunch.
